For Tutors
TutorNexus gives tutors full control over their rates, schedule, and session format — while handling the admin that makes independent tutoring unsustainable: matching, booking, payment, and scheduling. You keep 82% of every session. As you build your reputation on the platform, you unlock additional income streams through the Marketplace and Webinars.
Independent tutoring in South Africa is, at its core, a great idea with a logistics problem. A tutor who is good at their subject and good at teaching can earn a meaningful income doing work they find genuinely rewarding. The problem is everything around the actual teaching: finding students, managing cancellations, collecting payment, handling disputes, marketing themselves.
Most SA tutors spend meaningful time on non-teaching admin — time that doesn't earn them anything. The more experienced and successful they become, the more of this admin they face. It is, ironically, a success trap.
TutorNexus is designed to absorb that admin burden so that tutors spend their time on the work that generates income.
The Problem with Independent Tutoring Today
The majority of SA tutors operate through personal networks, word-of-mouth referrals, and WhatsApp groups. This model has a ceiling that is difficult to break through.
- Student acquisition is entirely on the tutor. Every new student requires personal outreach, which takes time and social capital. Growth is linear at best.
- Cash payments create accounting headaches. Without a formal payment system, tutors have no transaction record, no protection if a student disputes a session, and no easy way to manage their income at tax time.
- Scheduling is unstructured. Multiple students, multiple time zones of availability, ad hoc cancellations — without a system, the calendar becomes unmanageable as the student base grows.
- No platform for reputation. A tutor may be excellent, but without a structured review system, that quality is invisible to parents who don't know them personally.
How the Economics Work
TutorNexus charges an 18% platform commission on each session. Tutors keep 82%. This covers matching, infrastructure, payment processing, customer support, and the technology that makes the platform work.
Example
Tutors set their own rates. TutorNexus does not impose a rate ceiling. A tutor who builds a strong track record and high ratings can charge premium rates, and the platform supports that — it has no incentive to suppress tutor income.
Group sessions (up to 5 students) are also supported. Each student pays 75% of the solo rate, but the tutor earns that 75% times the number of students — a session with 4 students at 75% generates 3× the solo session income for the same hour of work.
Building Your Reputation on the Platform
TutorNexus's matching algorithm includes ratings and platform engagement as weighted factors. This means that as a tutor builds a track record — positive reviews, consistent session history, responsive communication — they become more visible in search results and more likely to be matched with new students.
Reviews are verified: only students who have completed a session with a tutor can leave a review. This protects tutors from unverified negative reviews and gives positive reviews more credibility.
Tutors also build profile data over time: subjects, grades, session types, response rates, and cancellation history. A complete, active profile with strong reviews generates student inquiries without any additional outreach effort from the tutor.
Marketplace and Webinar Hosting
Two additional income streams become available as tutors establish themselves on TutorNexus.
The Marketplace
After completing 50 sessions on the platform, tutors can upload study resources — notes, study guides, mock exams — to the Marketplace. Resources are priced between R50–R100. The tutor keeps 75% of each sale; the platform takes 25%.
Resources are reviewed before publication, then watermarked and made available to students platform-wide. A popular study guide or mock exam paper can generate recurring passive income with no additional effort after the initial upload.
Webinar Hosting
Each term, TutorNexus runs a Webinar for each subject and grade combination. The top 2 tutors on the leaderboard for that subject and grade earn the right to host. Webinars are 3-hour livestreamed exam revision sessions.
Tutors charge 60% of their normal hourly rate per student, with unlimited student capacity. For a tutor with a rate of R300/hr charging R180 per student, a Webinar with 40 students generates R7,200 in a single session.
Tutor Tiers and Rewards
TutorNexus has a gamification system for tutors based on completed sessions. As tutors move through tiers — Starter, Bronze, Silver, Sapphire, Platinum, Legend — they unlock benefits including reduced commission rates and priority placement in matching.
This is designed so that the tutors who invest in the platform benefit from it proportionally — the more sessions completed, the better the terms.

Do I need to be a qualified teacher to tutor on TutorNexus?▾
No. TutorNexus does not require SACE registration or a teaching qualification. However, all tutors are vetted for subject knowledge and teaching approach before being approved to take bookings. The platform has standards — it is not an open marketplace.
When does the 18% commission rate change?▾
Commission rates decrease as tutors climb the gamification tier system based on completed sessions. The specific thresholds and reduced rates are detailed in the tutor onboarding documentation and will be confirmed at platform launch.
How are earnings paid out?▾
Tutor earnings are held in an earnings account on the platform. Withdrawals can be requested when the balance exceeds the minimum threshold (R500–R1,000). Withdrawals are processed within 2 business days and are blocked for 48 hours after a deposit to manage fraud risk.
What subjects can I tutor on TutorNexus at launch?▾
TutorNexus launches with Mathematics (CAPS, Grades 8–12) as the primary subject. Additional subjects are planned for Phase 2. Tutors who apply now will be prioritised for expansion to other subjects.
